Young Guns and Boxes
I have been training at Charlotte Fencing Academy for around 5 years. ( I think. I am not really sure when I started.) As it is a 4 hour round trip to drive, I generally only get to train once a week. I do not count coaching at my own club as training.
At CHFA, there are three young men/teenagers that were boys when I first started training there. They have now passed on by me in their fencing ability. Now some of it is youthful athleticism, but they are good smart fencers as well. I might luck up in a pool bout against them, but it would be foolish to bet on me in a DE. ( I should have put the fear of God in them when they were smaller. I am smiling when I say that. They are all good boys and I am mostly joking when I write that.)
I mention these young men, because I also coach/l. I realized lately, there is nothing I could teach these kids. I could teach them about armory or vocabulary and things of that nature, but nothing that would make them better on the strip. As I did not start fencing until I was 51, I never experienced what it was like to be a fencer that is light and fast. I was once light and fast, but not a fencer. I am wondering now, if I wanted to try coaching at a higher level, could I do it? ( I should say, learn to coach at a higher level.)
This is just something, I have been thinking about lately.
Zivkovic Modern Fencing Equipment, Inc
I have no idea who reads my journal. That is what it is....a journal....not really a blog. I just use it to record my fencing journey. However, on the off chance that there are people that read it other than my coach, I am going to mention this. My club uses Favero scoring boxes and reels. For two years, I have fretted over the broken latches and hinges on the plastic carrying cases that contain this equipment. These boxes are around 95 dollars to replace. I did not want to spend that much club money on a plastic box and I did not want to put them in small suit cases where they would not fit snuggly. So I fretted and risked damage to expensive equipment. Then low and behold I was looking at Zivkovic Modern Fencing Equipment, Inc website and they sell hinges and latches for these boxes for 5 bucks a pop. All our boxes are now repaired and something small is wiped off my worry list.
